Senior Managing Editor

PURPOSE OF ROLE

Cochrane has established a centrally-resourced Editorial Service to support the efficient and timely publication of high-quality systematic reviews in the Cochrane Library.

In line with Cochrane’s strategy, the Senior Managing Editor will manage their own editorial team to help to ensure that The Cochrane Library maintains its reputation as the international source of trustworthy, independent, and relevant information to guide healthcare decisions. Working as part of a friendly and supportive international team, the Senior Managing Editor will be responsible for managing the efficient and timely editorial processing of a portfolio of approximately 150 publications per year.  The role holder will be expected to prioritise and delegate editorial tasks as appropriate. They will also need to be an advocate for the Editorial Service internally and externally to Cochrane and remain alert to immediate demands of delivering high-quality review content for publication in a timely fashion.     

Reporting to the Executive Editor and working with members of the Editorial Production and Methods Directorate, the role holder will need to have good awareness of Cochrane guidance for different types of standard and complex systematic reviews (intervention, qualitative, diagnostic test accuracy, prognosis, rapid and overview), plan how they will need to be handled in their team, and work to ensure that deadlines are met. The role holder will also be required to ensure that pilots aimed at innovating the editorial process can be supported as needed.  

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES/KEY RESULTS AREAS

  • Leading an editorial team of Managing Editors and Editorial Assistants within the Central Editorial Service, to ensure the efficient running of editorial systems and processes for reviews submitted to the Editorial Service, which involves:
    • Prioritising and assigning submissions to their editorial team
    • Overseeing the editorial process, including the editorial checks and the peer-review process for submissions with their team
    • Having strong awareness of team expertise and capacity to ensure effective management of submissions
    • Showing sensitivity when dealing with high-profile and controversial submissions
    • Demonstrating initiative and flexibility when prioritising or reprioritising tasks as the situation requires
    • Ensuring that Cochrane’s editorial and publishing policies are followed
    • Ensuring that published content is accurate, consistent, clear, and adheres to Cochrane standards
    • Liaising with appropriate teams to ensure effective dissemination of reviews
  • Contributing to projects aimed at improving or developing systems and processes, including pilots to explore innovation of editorial processes
  • Communicating with internal and external stakeholders to increase awareness of the Editorial Service
  • Providing line management to the editorial team
  • Providing mentorship to the editorial team, including identifying and facilitating additional skills training where required

  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and work with colleagues to ensure that new processes, workflow systems and lessons learned are implemented effectively
  • Work closely with colleagues in the Central Executive Team, other Cochrane entities, and publishers

​PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential attributes:

  • Degree in a relevant field or equivalent
  • An understanding of the importance of systematic reviews to clinical decision making
  • Familiarity with guidance and standards on the design, conduct, and reporting of systematic reviews, including Cochrane guidance, Methodological Expectations of Cochrane Intervention Reviews (MECIR), and GRADE methods
  • Familiarity with guidance for complex review methods, including diagnostic test accuracy, prognosis or network meta-analysis
  • Experience of managing the editorial process for systematic reviews, including systematic reviews using complex methods
  • Experience of providing technical editing for systematic reviews
  • Familiarity with best editorial practice, publication ethics and research integrity
  • An ability to develop and maintain working relationships with key stakeholders
  • Intermediate level IT skills, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent initiative and ability to think laterally to resolve or escalate problems
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work methodically and accurately

Desirable attributes:

  • Holds, or has held, an editorial position within Cochrane (e.g. Managing or Deputy Managing Editor)
  • Familiarity with Cochrane’s editorial and publishing policies
  • Experience of conducting a Cochrane Review
  • Experience in a leadership role, including line-management experience
