Cochrane Response Managing Director

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To lead and manage Cochrane’s evidence consultancy unit, Cochrane Response. Cochrane Response provides a broad range of literature review and evidence synthesis services to international policy makers and guideline developers to support evidence informed healthcare decision making. 

The postholder will run Cochrane Response; engaging with external stakeholders to attract new business and grow its annual revenues; leading a team of systematic reviewers; and coordinating key internal Cochrane stakeholders (including the Central Executive Team and Cochrane Groups) to  support the delivery of commissioned evidence projects.

There are three key elements to the role:

1.       Managing and running an evidence consultancy business unit.

            2.       Managing the team of systematic reviewers and their work in review           production, including the technical expertise this requires.

            3.       Networking and engaging with internal and external stakeholders to grow Cochrane Response and find new global commissioners and research funding opportunities.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES/KEY RESULT AREAS

Strategy

Responsible for the strategic direction, and setting and implementing the strategic growth plan for Cochrane Response.

      Direct and lead on the development of the Cochrane Response revenue growth plan and strategy through identification of new contracts and commissioners, and expansion in the types of research outputs including scoping reviews, rapid reviews, evidence gap maps, guidelines and HTAs.

Technical Management

Lead the systematic review team, ensuring they have resources, systems and project management processes required to deliver high quality, relevant and timely reviews and evidence reports.

To oversee the quality assurance of evidence projects, ensuring systems and processes are in place to deliver against agreed standards.

Provide technical expertise to the review team across a range of review types - rapid reviews, systematic reviews, scoping reviews, evidence gap maps and qualitative reviews.

Business management

Responsible and accountable for business, contract and budget management, ensuring the consultancy business remains profitable.

Lead the development of proposals and tenders working with Senior Systematic Reviewers to set realistic timelines, understand the policy and practice context for the evidence projects and the needs of the commissioner.

Provide business update and operational reports to the Governing Board and Senior Management Team.

Relationship management

Networking and engaging with Cochrane Centre Directors, Network Editors and Co-ordinating Editors to identify new research funding and global commissioning opportunities.

Develop and maintain partnerships with global commissioning organisations and key individuals in policy and research to further our objectives and grow and expand the evidence projects provided by Cochrane Response and in partnership with Cochrane groups.

PERSON SPECIFICATION 

-   First degree in related field e.g. medical sciences, biology, statistics and a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications.

-   5+ years of relevant experience in systematic reviews.

-   Strong research skills with experience of meta-analysis, network meta-analysis, qualitative reviews etc. and knowledge of different types of evidence reviews.

-   Authorship of multiple systematic reviews and on at least one Cochrane Review.

-   Demonstrable, senior level people management and leadership in academic or consultancy setting.

-   Must have demonstrated expertise in relevant evidence synthesis project management activities.

-   Strategic consulting skills with the ability to work with commissioners to appreciate/diagnose issues/opportunities and agree on a realistic plan to deliver on project objectives.

-   Good organization and planning skills.

-   Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills (both written and oral).

-   Strong leadership skills, self-motivated, adaptable to a dynamic environment.

-   Able to collaborate effectively with the project team, and external partners.

-   Adaptable and flexible to changing business and customer needs.

-   Proficient IT skills, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

-   Able to travel internationally.

Internal: Editorial and Methods Department, Financial Services and People Services

External: Cochrane Centres, Networks and Review Groups. Global commissioners including policy makers, guideline developers and research funders.

DIMENSIONS

Budgetary responsibility: Yes, based on approved annual budget. C£500,000 revenue and cost budget with expectation of growth.

Number of direct and indirect reports: 2 direct reports, senior systematic reviewers within Cochrane Response. 5 indirect reports, systematic reviewers within Cochrane Response team.
